DIVORCE & CONFIDENCE COACHING

Who Am I Now? Finding Yourself After Years of Being a Wife and Mother

You may know everybody else’s needs except your own

For years, your identity may have been built around what other people needed.

Mum. Wife. Partner. Carer. Provider. The organiser. The person who remembers everything.

Then divorce happens and suddenly there is room.

And instead of relief, you may hear a question: Who am I now?

It’s a surprisingly difficult question.

You didn’t disappear

The woman you were before the marriage isn’t necessarily waiting somewhere to be recovered.

You have changed.

You’ve lived. You’ve learned. You’ve survived things.

You have preferences you didn’t have before.

So don’t make the goal becoming your old self again.

Get curious about who you are now.

Start with preferences

This sounds almost too simple.

What music do you like? What clothes do you actually enjoy wearing? What do you want your weekends to look like? Where would you travel? What food do you like? What kind of people make you feel comfortable? What do you want to learn? What do you no longer tolerate?

These questions help because identity is built through choices.

Try things without turning them into a new identity

You don’t have to announce that you’re now a runner, entrepreneur, traveller or artist.

Try the thing.

You may love it.

You may hate it.

Both answers are useful.

The pressure to find one grand purpose can make starting harder than it needs to be.

Give yourself permission to experiment.

Pay attention to what gives you energy

Notice the moments when you lose track of time.

Maybe you enjoy writing. Maybe you like organising. Maybe you love learning. Maybe you enjoy helping people. Maybe you like working with your hands. Maybe you want a business. Maybe you want a quieter life.

There is information in those moments.

Create a life that reflects you

Eventually, the little choices start adding up.

Your home. Your clothes. Your friendships. Your work. Your routines. Your boundaries. Your hobbies. Your plans.

And one day you may look around and realise something.

You recognise yourself again.

Not the woman you were before.

The woman you are now.
