DIVORCE & CONFIDENCE COACHING

How to Trust Yourself Again After Divorce

When you don’t trust your own decisions anymore

One of the hardest things about divorce isn’t always losing the relationship.

Sometimes it’s losing confidence in your own judgment.

You may look back and think, How did I not see that? Why did I stay so long? Why did I ignore that feeling? Why did I choose him? Why did I say yes? Why did I say no?

And once you start questioning yourself, even small decisions can feel strangely difficult.

Should I take this job? Should I move? Should I date? Should I spend the money? Should I call my friend?

You keep looking outside yourself for confirmation.

That can be exhausting.

The good news is that self-trust doesn’t require you to suddenly become certain about everything. It is built by making small decisions, observing the results and learning that you can handle what happens next.

Stop demanding certainty

A lot of us think confident people know exactly what to do.

They don’t.

They make decisions with the information they have.

Sometimes they’re right. Sometimes they’re wrong. Then they adjust.

You don’t need a guarantee before you move.

Ask yourself: What do I know? What don’t I know? What matters most to me? What is the worst realistic outcome? If it doesn’t work, what could I do next?

That last question is powerful.

It changes the question from “Can I guarantee this will work?” to “Can I handle it if it doesn’t?”

Usually, the answer is yes.

Keep small promises to yourself

Self-trust grows through evidence.

If you tell yourself you’ll go for a walk and you do it, that’s evidence.

If you say you’ll stop answering messages late at night and you do, that’s evidence.

If you decide not to explain yourself to someone who constantly criticises you and you keep the boundary, that’s evidence.

These things may sound small.

They’re not.

You are teaching yourself: I listen to myself. I act on what I say. I can rely on me.

Don’t make the promises enormous.

Pick one or two.

Then keep them.

Learn to separate intuition from fear

This can take practice.

Fear tends to shout.

It gives you ten possible disasters and wants an answer immediately.

Your quieter inner knowing may sound much less dramatic.

You don’t have to call every feeling intuition. Sometimes you are simply anxious.

Give yourself time.

Write down what you are feeling. Sleep on important decisions when possible. Talk to someone who can challenge you without taking over the decision.

Then make the decision yourself.

You are allowed to seek advice without handing somebody else the steering wheel.

You will make mistakes

This part is unavoidable.

You will make another bad decision.

You will trust the wrong person occasionally.

You will buy something you shouldn’t have bought.

You will say yes when you should have said no.

That doesn’t mean you have failed at rebuilding your confidence.

Self-trust isn’t believing you’ll always get it right.

It’s knowing you can respond when you get it wrong.

That’s a much stronger kind of confidence.

Start with one decision today

Choose one small thing you’ve been outsourcing to other people’s opinions.

What do you want to wear? Where do you want to go? What do you want to eat? Who do you want to spend time with? What do you want to say no to?

Make the decision.

Don’t poll five people.

Notice how it feels.

You’re not trying to become a completely different person overnight.

You’re reminding yourself that your voice still counts.
