Attending a wedding in the city, means that you’re only a stone’s throw from the hands of a salon professional who can tease and volumise your locks to their fullest. And once the wind doesn’t dismantle their work on the way back to the car, you’re good to go. However, as veteran guests of a few weddings abroad, and a few off the beaten track here at home, we know that the logistics (weather, proximity to a decent stylist…) of creating a decent wedding guest hairstyle, or even a look for a hen do, or rehearsal dinner, can go against us at times.
If being in a stately home in the wilds of Connemara or villa-living in Tuscany separates you from your regular stylist, we have an easy volumising hair hack you can put in your back pocket to add that salon-worth volume. It costs very little and is easy enough for beginners to get the desired style.
You will need a couple of key things, but these are easily packed and used on the day for better volume shape and hold, and there is no need to worry about heat damage. Perfect, right? Let’s get into this…

Volumising Hair Hack
What You Need:
- A set of six to eight velcro rollers in the right size
- Heat memory spray
- A hairdryer
- Hairspray

- Color Wow This Is How We Roll12 Hair Rollers (€18.95) for its mix of medium and large rollers that are easy to use and great for mid to long hair.
- We also rate Drybar High Tops Self-Grip Rollers, a pack of six rollers that are great for adding volume across the crown of the head, €12.99
Old-school indeed, but a pack of velcro rollers is the secret to this wedding guest hair hack, especially for ceremonies abroad. They weigh nothing so they are baggage allowance-friendly, cause no heat damage, everyone can use them, and they help lift humidity-ridden hair. They need to be the right size though, so choose according to your hair length. Shorter styles need smaller rollers, medium ones work for shoulder-length hair, and a mix of medium and large are for longer-haired guests.
Expect to pay between €12 and €20 for a set, it’s the best investment (and probably the cheapest) you’ll make for hairstyling this year.

Step 1. Set The Style
- The easiest way to do this volumising hair hack is to blow-dry your hair so it’s smooth and ready for rollers.
- Separate the hair into sections and roll each section around the self-gripping roller before moving on to the next section.
- Depending on the look you are going for, roll the hair under for better volume through the lengths.
- If you are hoping for a more flicked-out look, roll the hair sections away from the face and at the back of the head, roll the hair upwards for movement and flicky ends.
- Once every roller is in place, spritz a little heat memory spritz across all the rollers and grab your hairdryer once more.

- Well, actually we love L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART Pli Shaper (and so do hairdressers because it works every time, €22.45/190ml.
- Kérastase Coiffage Couture, Protective & Styling Heat Lotion, Reshapable Hold works on all hair types and is especially good for second-day hair if you want to switch your look up, €37.60/150ml
Step 2. Heat Action
- With your dryer on low heat and gentle air, gently warm up every section that has rollers for the heat memory spray to become activated.
- After a minute or so, switch off the dryer and leave the hair to cool down. The longer you leave it, the better, so this might be a good time to switch from wedding guest hair to wedding guest makeup and get your glam on.
- Right before you finish up your look, remove the rollers, shake out your hair the way you want it to look and finish with a spritz of hairspray.
- Depending on your hair type, you might only need a regular strength hairspray, but if it’s fine and wispy you might be looking at salon strength.
Whatever you need for perfect wedding guest hair, go for it, it’s only one day but it is a long one!
